Garlic Chives (Nira)

Garlic Chives (Nira) are another easy to grow herb. The leaves are thin and flat. They have a mild garlic taste and used in many oriental dishes. Though they do produce flowers and seeds that can grow new plants they may not reproduce the same plant due to cross pollination, so it is recommended to simply eat the flowers instead.

The root or bulb will grow new leaves once cut, so one pot of Garlic Chives is generally more than most families need. The above picture shows new growth about four days after cut.

To propagate new plants, it is best to separate the bulb (root) in the spring ever three years. The above picture shows a root that has created three sprouts. In a year or two I will be able to break the root into three different bulbs.

Cut all the leaves off and dig up the bulbs. Cut any dangling roots, break up the bulbs, recharge the soil and replant the bulbs a few inches apart. The bulbs will regenerate and the process can be repeated in a few years for more plants.
