Guavas are finally starting to grow.

Unfortunately, the bats found my tree and damaged a lot of the fruit. 

I wrapped each individual fruit, but the bats just tore through the paper bags; therefore, I hung up motion detecting lights to try and distract them. 

Recently, the Guava started to ripen and I'm getting some nice fruit. I do not know if the lights are the reason the bats are gone, or if they found a different tree. 

I lost a lot of fruit due to the bats, but the tree is constantly flowering so still expect hundreds of fruit this season.

We had a typhoon that lasted quite a while (1-7 August). Most of my trees had damage, but the Guava fared well. I estimate 30% of the smaller fruit were knocked off, but many of the larger fruit made it. Go figure!

It's Guava season!

I'm getting both red Guava and some Strawberry Guava. 

I picked a few green Guava due to their size. We have a typhoon coming and these will most certainly be damaged.

I started wrapping the Guava about two weeks ago and estimate I wrapped nearly 300 based on the number of bags I used. There are still some small fruit on the tree I did not wrap and plan to wrap them with the bags of fruit that drop sooner.

A few Guava dropped early. They are not quite rip, so not sure why they dropped. Perhaps I did not water enough or the wind blew them off. I hope they are sweet.

These Guava are getting bigger and there are hundreds of fruit on the tree. I need to start wrapping them soon.

I picked the last rip Guava from this tree about a month ago and it is again full of fruit. 

The fruit are still young and the birds will not bother them yet, but insects will start to damage them. You can see a fruit at the top-left that is brown. Ants and Mealybug larva damages it. I need to cleanup the tree and start wrapping the fruit.

Guava Juice Receipt

This season my Guava tree was so productive it was challenging to eat them all or even give them away, so instead I made Guava Juice. Guava is high in vitamin C and includes iron, vitamin A and calcium. And, unlike other fruits, Guava only contains 68 calories per 100 grams. Of course this is a personal choice, but to keep the calories down you can use Stevia, Monkfruit sweetener or coconut sugar. 

Ingredients:

    500 grams Guava fruit

    350 grams water

    60 grams sugar/sweetener

Steps:

    1. Wash the Guava

        Note: It is really important to wash before pealing

    2. Peal the Guava and place on scale (500g)

    3. Place Guava and water (350g) in blender

    4. On the lowest speed, mix for 20-30 seconds

        Note: fast speed will break the seeds    

    5. Transfer to a mix to a bowl and calendar 

    6. Use a spatula on the inside on the calendar

        Note: Guava seeds are small, so do not press the pulp

    8. Add sugar/sweetener (60g) to the mix, refrigerate and enjoy 

        Note: Add more water if too think

Starting to get some really nice Guava. As I mentioned, I place each Guava in a paper bag to prevent birds and other pests from damaging the fruit, which creates some absolutely beautiful fruit.

Guava are starting to ripen.

Guava has very soft skin that birds and other pests can damage easily. In order to get flawless fruit it is necessary to wrap them.

Guava (White and Red)

This white Guava tree only had one fruit, so I expected it to be huge.

Once the fruit started to turn light green, I wrapped it to protect it from birds and other pests.

The fruit dropped two days ago. As I suspected, it was huge. The average red Guava is between 70-150 grams. Even a 200-250 gram Guava is considered large, so this is massive.

Well, I ate this Guava yesterday (12/19) and as I suspected it was super sweet and creamy. The taste of this type of Guava is much different to the standard red Guava. I wish everyone could experience the flavor and texture of this type of Guava.

The red Guava tree is full of fruit. It is starting to get cool, so these fruit will take a while to grow. I will start to wrap the fruit soon to protect them from birds and other pests.

This Guava (white) tree has one fruit. The tree is putting all it's energy into this one fruit, so I suspect it will be extremely large and sweet. I can't wait to try it.

When I went on vacation two weeks ago this Guava tree was in full bloom and I thought upon my return I would have tons of fruit on the tree, but they are not growing as fast as I anticipated. I suspect the Papaya tree that grow beside this Guava tree is shading it out. I think I need to cut down the Papaya tree....again.

I picked the last Guava about a week ago and the tree is full of buds again, plus there are a few small fruit on the tree. This is a super productive tree. 

It blossoms twice a year, but each blossoming season is long and extends into the next season, so it has fruit more than six months out of the year, if not more. 

There are actually a few new fruit on the tree that will be ready to pick in about 10 days.

I only have 2-3 more Guava on the tree. I picked these a few days ago, but they are larger than average. There are new buds on the tree already, so expect a new batch of fruit in a few months.

Guava season is nearly over. my tree has a few new flower buds, but do not think it will produce many new fruit.

It is peak Guava season and I go out in the mornings to find fruit all over the ground. Of course, I've wrapped them, so they are not damaged.

I'm finding the average Guava is between 150 and 200 grams, which are pretty decent sized. I'm also getting tons of Strawberry Guava. They ripen quickly and I'm trying to eat them, but there are just so many.

I made jam using Strawberry Guava. I did not use pectin, so it is like a thick syrup; however, it tastes great and perfect for yogurt.

Some of the red Guava fruit I wrapped the other day are starting to drop and in pretty good condition.

Average Guava are between 50~200 grams, which makes these a little larger than average.

I have Strawberry Guava bushes around my property and get a handful everyday.
