Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen)

I have a planter with Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen) that I neglected, but the other day I have to move the planter and found a few beans I did not notice.

(6/3) I only get a few Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen) every few days, so put them in the refrigerator until I need them. The store well. Here are the beans I collected over the past week or so. 127 grams (4.5 oz).

(6/1) I have four pretty productive plants, but planted five more to improve my daily harvest.

(5/14) Am I feeding my Beans too much! I missed these beans so will leave them to mature and will use them to plant more plants.

(5/21) I though these beans would stop growing and turn brown soon, but they keep growing. I hope I can get some good planting seed.

Beans (Bikkuri Jumbo, Bush, Flat, Helda, Romano, String)

The Beans are starting to grow, but it is difficult to see them with all the lettuce sprouts, but they are starting to pop up. I like to grow Lettuce with my Beans and Tomatoes. I find they grow well together and compliment the soil.

(12 March) The Lettuce has ready grown and three String Bean plants appeared.

This is the second planter I have with Beans and Lettuce. I've already started to harvest the Lettuce and two Bean spouts finally popped through. At lunch I suspended some ropes for the Beans to climb.

(10 April) Well, beans are starting to mature and they are all Bush Beans. None of the Flat Beans grew. I'll keep trying.

I planted a mix of Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen) and Flat Beans (Helda beans, Romano beans, Gavar Thali, Bikkuri Jumbo beans) yesterday. As soon as they start to sprout I will plant Lettuce or something else to take advantage of the lower part of the planter.

I planted Bush beans (String Beans, Ingen) and Green Lettuce two weeks ago and both are starting to sprout. To the left you can see Lettuce and to the right and in the middle, Bush Beans.

This one Bush Bean (String Bean, Ingen) plant has produced many beans this year and continues to flower.

(26 January) Picked these yesterday.

(25 January) I planted about a dozen Bush Bean seeds last weekend. If they produce as much as the current plant, I'll be overwhelmed with beans. Also, I sprinkled Green Lettuce seeds on top to make as much use of the soil as possible, since they will not compete with one another. In fact, they will compliment each other as the beans put nitrogen in the soil that the Lettuce needs and the Lettuce will provide cover to keep to soil moist and weed free.

I have a rough Bush Bean (Ingen, String Bean) plant. It is well past it's season, but growing well and have many flowers, so expect to get some beans in a few weeks.

Not maturing as quickly as the package claimed, but I suspect this is due to the cooling temperature, which is between mid-60's (18°C) to mid-70's (24°C). 

Green Peppers (11 1/2 weeks old)

The plant to the right is flowering and has a few small Peppers.

Eggplant (12 weeks old)

I cut off most of the diseased leaves and added some nutrients and fertilizer. It has rebounded and has about ten Eggplant growing, plus it is still flowering. As I predicted from a previous post, the Eggplant are beautifully purple with no scaring now that it has cooled down.

Green Peppers (9 1/2 months old)

Tons of Green Peppers and flowering again. I keep adding nutrients and fertilizer and it keeps going. This plant has produced over 45 Peppers in the past. We just picked six Peppers today and there are still 6 more Peppers on the plant, plus there is new leaf growth and blooming flowers so I expect many more Peppers from this one hardy plant.

I only have three Bush Bean (String Bean, Ingen) plants, but they produce five or 6 beans a week. I'll plant more next season.

Not all the Bush Bean seeds matured, but a few have and doing well. They have started to wrap around the banister rails.

The Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen) from the second planting are starting to sprout. Only one seed from the first planting survived (top right). I suspect I planted the seeds too deep, but the second time around is a charm.

I planted the Bush Beans (String Beans, Ingen) on July 8 and I just noticed one sprout.

Today I removed lettuce from two on my planters and replaced them with Bush Beans (also known as String Beans or Ingen in Japanese). String Beans are a good rotational crop after lettuce. Just loosen up the soil, clean out any roots, add some manure and plant fertilizer.

This pack had about 40 seeds inside, but I only had space for about 10 seeds. These are climbers, so will need to put up a net for them as soon as they start to sprout.
