Green Lettuce, Beets, Red Radish, and Cilanto

This Lettuce plant is doing well and I need to remove the bottle soon.

These Lettuce plants are doing well, but still fragile, so will keep them covered a while longer. 

Clusters of Beet seedlings are sprouting. I need to separate them soon. These are salad Beets. They can be used like regular Beets, but are extremely sweet and can be eaten raw.

The seedlings on the left are salad Radishes. I need to separate them. To the right is a Tomato plant. I'm not sure where that came from :)

The Pakuchi (Cilantro) seedlings are doing well. They are still fragile, so will keep them covered a little longer. I've already started to plant more and will try and keep the cycle going all year.

I planted a Beet that went bad in my refrigerator in late January and decided to pull it last week. I was surprised how large it was. The stock was over three foot tall.

The Beet weighed 630 grams (1.4 lbs). That's a lot of Beets.

My Beets were getting pretty large and I have Bitter Melon (Goya) starting to grow in this same container, so decided to remove the Beets. Plus, I love to eat the leaves and stocks and wanted to harvest while they were still tender and fresh.

I got roughly 670g (1.5lbs) of Beets from one container. I still have Beets in another container, but they are not as large as these and will harvest them later.

Carrots and Beets

I pulled some Carrots and Beets last week. What surprised me was how sweet the Carrots and Beets were and the aroma of the Carrots. So strong compared to store bought. I guess they loose their freshness sitting on the self.

I had a Beet in my refrigerator that went bad, but instead of throwing it away I decided to plant it. In just three weeks it has grown so fast. I'm curious what I will get.

I planted these Beets from seed on 10 December. The Beet plant in the first picture is a standard Beet, which grows to the size of a baseball, but the Beets in the second picture are called Salad Beets. Salad Beets are smaller and sweeter and can be eaten raw or cooked.

(12/30) Starting to see more and more Beet sprouts. Some seeds did not sprout, so planted some more seeds in the blank spaces a few days ago.

Sunny Lettuce (Red Leaf Lettuce)

(12/30) The top two planters contain Sunny Lettuce (Red Leaf Lettuce). I planted the top planter about a month before the second and it is now starting to bolt. I will leave them flower and harvest the seeds for future planting. The third planter contains Pakuchi (Cilantro) and the bottom, green onions.

I planted this Lettuce on 8 October about a month after the second container, along with some beets.

I need to get some more Lettuce growing, so planted more seeds. This is Green Lettuce. It is a loose leaf Lettuce like Sunny Lettuce, but the leaves do not turn red.

(12/20) I had a spare planter, so planted some more Beets.

 

Beets, Carrots (Ninjin) and Swiss Chard

Carrots are growing quickly and I'll be able to start harvesting them soon. One benefit of Carrots is they can stay in the ground for quite some time until they are needed. 

The Swiss Chard is growing well. I will start harvesting the larger leaves to allow more to grow. Swiss Chard has a long growing season so one plant can produce a quite lot.

The Beets are not growing as fast as I hoped, but like Carrots, they can remain in the soil for quite a while until I need them. I also planted a new planter with about 20 seeds for more Beets.

Since only six Beet plants survived, I moved some Carrots from another planter to this planter. All are doing well.

 

Sunny Lettuce (Red Leaf Lettuce)

(10/8) The Sunny Lettuce (Red Leaf Lettuce) in the two white planters is doing fine. I planted more Lettuce in the black planter in three spots (left, right and center), but nothing on the edges, so I transplanted some Beets to take advantage of the empty space.

Starting to see Mesclun sprout and one little Beets in the center.

I can see some Italian Parsley sprouting and again one little Beet.

(9/27) I planted quite a few Beet seeds, but only six made it through the hot summer; however, I planted a few more in my seeding tray a few days ago and will transplant them when they sprout.

(8/29) I planted Beets about a month ago, but they died due to the heat, so I decided to try again. I moved the container and planted new seed 10 days ago and many are sprouting.

(5/8) I planted a lot of Beets seeds and they are maturing at different times, which is nice since I can pull a beet when I need while the remaining Beets are left to continue to grow.

These a Salad Beets, which are smaller compared to regular Beets and much sweeter. They are so sweet they are grown to eat raw. So delicious.

My Beets are starting to grow, but the bulbs have not really matured yet.
