Red Cucumber (Moui)

(8/29) I am cleaning up my Herb garden and decided to harvest the Red Cucumbers (Moi). They each weigh 960 grams (2 pounds). I planted more seeds, but do not think they will sprout.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(8/20) One of my Red Cucumbers (Moi) dropped.

This Moi is still maturing on the vine, but ready to harvest anytime.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(8/17) Red Cucumbers grow quickly. You can see the difference in just five days. I will let these become totally brownish-red and develop what looks like cracks before I harvest them, but they will stay fresh on the vine for weeks, so there's no need to rush to harvest them. Just leave them hang until you need one.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(8/10) Red Cucumbers (Moi) grow extremely fast. This Cucumber will double in size and become reddish-brown in just a week to two. I have four Cucumbers on the plant now, but expect more. Red Cucumbers are large and take a while to eat, and because of their size they can be left on the plant for weeks until you are ready to pick them.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(8/7) My Red Cucumbers (Moi) are starting to mature.

(8/8) I found four that are growing quite well and see many smaller ones that will probably just dry up and fall off the plant, but suspect I will get many Cucumbers this year. These are still small (4-5 inches), but will grow to a length of 10-11 inches in a few weeks. I find the Cucumbers in the shade do the best.

As a reminder, this is a Red Cucumber.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(7/21) I found my first Red Cucumber (Moi) of the season. My plants sprouted late this year, but better late than never. This is a small Cucumber and not sure it will fully develop, but the plant is super healthy and has so many flowers, so I am bound to get a few.
The Red Cucumber (Moi) plant is running across the top of my fence with flowers at the based of every leaf.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(6/20) I planted a few Red Cucumber seeds in early April, but only one plant survived. For more than a month it grew slowly, but finally started to take off. I wish more plants survived.

Passion Fruit Cuttings

I have a container in which I'm growing Passion Fruit cuttings, but there was so much space, so I decided to try and grow other things considering it will take a year for the cuttings to grow. The Celery will take 4-5 months to mature and the Red Cucumbers are vines, so should not block out the Pass Fruit cuttings. I am a little worried about the root growth, but will add extra nutrients to compensate. I'll know in a few months if I made a mistake.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

I got one, out of season, Red Cucumber this year and picked it last weekend. It was not as large as some of my previous Cucumbers, but nothing to laugh at. That's a one and a half pound Cucumber.

I planted Red Cucumber (Moi) seeds I collected last year. Red Cucumber vines grow pretty long (15-20 feet) and now thinking how to hang them. I think I will let them grow over the balcony to the ground

Red Cucumber (Moi)

(26 December)
Red Cucumber (Moi) out of season, but growing well.
(2 January)
(8 January)
This Moi is not as large as normal, but starting to turn brown, so will be ready to be picked in about two weeks.
The Moi has not grown, but starting to ripen.
(15 January) This Red Cucumber has not grown much, but is starting to mature as it turns brown. It will be ready to pick once it gets a nice dark brown and the skin looks like it has cracks. It can remain on the vine for weeks or even months and remain editable, but best when picked in a week or two when ready.
I could have let the Cucumber on the vine a little longer until it became dark brown, but found that it was not growing so decided to pick it. Additionally, the pot this vine was growing also has Bitter Melon which were starting to grow, so thought to clear the planter for them. I went ahead and prepared a new and larger planter for new Cucumber plants. See my 27 January post.

Red Cucumber

(12/25) Found an out of season Red Cucumber on my second floor balcony. It looks like it is doing well and hope it grows to maturity.
(12/26) I can see notable growth in just one day.
(12/29) Three days later.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

This Red Cucumber (Moi) plant is growing wild in my backyard and I'm so surprised to see so many Cucumbers. I normally plant Red Cucumbers in February, so hope these Cucumbers develop. It would be a nice treat.

Fall Planting in a Sub-tropical Climate (Update)

In addition to what I have in the tower, I also planted a verity of vegetables in individual planters on 30 September, and just starting to see the first signs of growth.
Can see some Green Pepper (Piman) sprouts to the left.

The leaf of this Bitter Melon (Goya, Nigauri) plant is larger than my previous plants. I have a lot of seed stock and some from fruit I ate, so believe these seeds are not from my original seed stock, but that's fine. I'm curious to see what the fruit looks like.

Some of the Strawberry Guava seeds are starting to sprout. Now Strawberry Guava is a tree, so I will need to transplant them soon.

I lost the Tomato plant to the left, but the other two are doing fine.

Both Eggplant are doing fine.

Fall Planting in a Sub-tropical Climate

We had a pretty big typhoon 10-days ago that devastated many of my vegetables, but it gave me the opportunity to  begin a new fall crop. Remember, I am in a sub-tropical location, so many plants grow nearly year around. Here's what I have going on the end of September.
If you recall, I was growing strawberries in this tower, but re-purposed it for the below, which I grew from my own seed stock:
  • First Tier - Basil
  • Second Tier - Green Peppers
  • Third Tier - Tomato
  • Fourth Tier - Lettuce
  • Fifth Tier - Tomato
  • Sixth Tier - Pineapple and some Lettuce

Cucumber (Top Right), Okawakame (Center), String Beans (Bottom Left).

In the front section I recharged the soil and planted Red Cucumbers (Moi) and Bitter Melon (Goya, Nigauri).

Tomatoes
Eggplant (Nasu)

Green Peppers (Piman)

Cilantro (Pakkuchi)

This is my Green Pepper plant from nearly five months ago. I was going to remove it, but found new peppers and flowers, so decided to leave it and give it same fertilizer and plant food. To the left I have a Red Lettuce plant and in the center a Garlic Clove (Niniku).
I put this small Red Lettuce plant in a bucket to hide it from my puppy, who loves lettuce. She can smell it, but hasn't found it YET.
I'm trying something new, Strawberry Guava. I bought these from the famer's market last week and like them, so saved some of the seeds and see how it goes.

Red Cucumber (Moi)

The Red Cucumber (Moi) plant in my side yard is just about finished and I was going to remove the vine, but discovered this baby Moi hanging off my Persimmon tree. Nice surprise.

Red Cucumber (Moi) Update 3

I picked my first Red Cucumber (Moi). It is roughly 25cm (9.8 in) long and weights nearly 1.3Kg (2.8 lbs). Now that’s a big Cucumber.

Red Cucumber (Moi) Update 2

My Red Cucumber (Moi) plant is really starting to produce. I now have six fruit. Three are quite large and three others are still small.

Red Cucumber (Moi) Update

The Red Cucumber (Moi) is growing at roughly 1cm to 2cm a day and starting to turn brown at the very top. You can see a little brown on the 27 July picture.
24 July (15cm long)

25 July (16cm long)

26 July (17.5cm long)

27 July (20cm long)
29 July (21cm long)
3 August (24 cm long) I will pick this in a few days once the entire fruit looks like it has cracks, like it looks at the top.

I lost the first Moi baby probably since it did not get pollinated, but I found this one the other day and pollinated it myself. I'll be able to tell if I was successful in a few day.
(3 August) the second Red Cucumber (Moi) is growing quickly. As mentioned above, I found a third fruit and pollinated it myself, but not sure if it made it yet. I also found a forth Moi on my second floor balcony and pollinated it.
