Okra

One of the Okra pods started to split, which means it is time to remove the seeds. Of course, you can store the entire pod as is, but removing the seeds saves space.

To harvest the seeds just peel back the pod shell and remove the seeds. Each pod can produce between 100-200 seeds. This particular pod produced about 130 seeds.

Place in a dry area and let the seeds dry for a week or two before storing. Remember to annotate what type of seed and date stored. I can tell you from experience, Okra, Papaya, Malabar Spinach and many other seeds really look similar once dried, so it is critical to label the seeds when storing.

I let a few Okra grow for my seed stock, but removed a few due to the typhoon. Normally it is best to leave the pods on the plant to dry, but I believe they are mature enough to produce viable seeds. I will let the pods dry before I remove the seeds.

Okra are highly productive. I'm getting a handful of Okra every few days from just a few plants. 

Collected over the past week. 

I left one Okra on the plant for the seeds, but surprised how large it got.

Okra is growing quickly and already getting Okra. One of the containers also has Peanuts and they are growing crazy too. They seem to compliment one another.

I have Okra in this container, but I see two Peanut plants as well. I did not plant the Peanut plants, but suspect a missed a few peanuts from last season.

These Okra plants sprouted early this year and already started to produce. I see some other plants popping up. I guess I planted those seeds a little too deep, but all is good.

Today's Harvest

Today I got my first Okra and Cherry Tomato, plus another handful of Beans.

I try and pick Acerola Cherries as soon as they start to turn red. I would like to leave them on longer so they could get larger, but pests tend to damage them. This cherry was pecked at by birds.

I pulled this Carrot a few days ago. I still have a few Carrots in the ground that will last a month or two, but should plant more.

(01/10) I try and let a few plants grow to seed so I can collect the seeds for future planting. This is an Okra that started to split. You can seed the black round seeds inside.

Just this one Okra produced 43 seeds, which is enough for a whole season's planting.

My Okra plants are flowering nearly every day. Okra grow so fast. I can pick the Okra about a week after it flowers.
