Cucumber (Kyuri)

This Cucumber (Kyuri) plant has about 20 Cucumbers and it is just a foot and a half tall. I wonder hope many it will produce.

The Cucumber plant I bought from a nursery is already producing Cucumbers with 6-7 visable.

The Cucumber seeds I planted are growing quickly and starting to develop primary leave growth.

I repurposed the planter I grew Tomatoes and planted Cucumbers. I purchased on plant from a nursery and planted seed. The seeds are just starting to sprout.

My Cucumber (Kyuri) plant is doing well since I moved it to a more shaded area. I wish I moved it sooner. I had six plants originally, but only one left.

(06/16) My Cucumber (Kyuri) plants are starting to bear fruit, but I lost a few to caterpillars. It took a few days of careful inspection, but think I removed them all. There are many cucumbers and the plants are still flowering, so expect a huge harvest.

(6/11) I have my first Cucumber (Kyuri) of the season. The plants are full of flowers and the bees are all over, so expect many more to come.

I live in a sub-tropical region. Cucumbers can be planted between April and July and harvested between June and September. These are standard Cucumbers and grow to an average length of 20 cm (8 inches).

I have three Cucumber (Kyuri) plants. I can see three Cucumbers growing, but there are a lot of flowers, so expect more. I also have Red Cucumber plants growing, but they are not growing quickly. Red Cucumbers do best when planted in early fall; however, it is starting to get cool here so hope they start taking off.

Fall Planting in a Sub-tropical Climate (Update)

In addition to what I have in the tower, I also planted a verity of vegetables in individual planters on 30 September, and just starting to see the first signs of growth. 

Can see some Green Pepper (Piman) sprouts to the left.

The leaf of this Bitter Melon (Goya, Nigauri) plant is larger than my previous plants. I have a lot of seed stock and some from fruit I ate, so believe these seeds are not from my original seed stock, but that's fine. I'm curious to see what the fruit looks like.

Some of the Strawberry Guava seeds are starting to sprout. Now Strawberry Guava is a tree, so I will need to transplant them soon.

I lost the Tomato plant to the left, but the other two are doing fine.

Both Eggplant are doing fine.

Fall Planting in a Sub-tropical Climate

We had a pretty big typhoon 10-days ago that devastated many of my vegetables, but it gave me the opportunity to  begin a new fall crop. Remember, I am in a sub-tropical location, so many plants grow nearly year around. Here's what I have going on the end of September.

If you recall, I was growing strawberries in this tower, but re-purposed it for the below, which I grew from my own seed stock:

• First Tier - Basil
• Second Tier - Green Peppers 
• Third Tier - Tomato
• Fourth Tier - Lettuce
• Fifth Tier - Tomato
• Sixth Tier - Pineapple and some Lettuce

In the front section I recharged the soil and planted Red Cucumbers (Moi) and Bitter Melon (Goya, Nigauri).

This is my Green Pepper plant from nearly five months ago. I was going to remove it, but found new peppers and flowers, so decided to leave it and give it same fertilizer and plant food. To the left I have a Red Lettuce plant and in the center a Garlic Clove (Niniku).

I put this small Red Lettuce plant in a bucket to hide it from my puppy, who loves lettuce. She can smell it, but hasn't found it YET.

I'm trying something new, Strawberry Guava. I bought these from the famer's market last week and like them, so saved some of the seeds and see how it goes.

Red Cucumber (Moi) Update 3

I picked my first Red Cucumber (Moi). It is roughly 25cm (9.8 in) long and weights nearly 1.3Kg (2.8 lbs). Now that’s a big Cucumber.

My Red Cucumber (Moi) plant is really starting to produce. I now have six fruit. Three are quite large and three others are still small.

The Red Cucumber (Moi) is growing at roughly 1cm to 2cm a day and starting to turn brown at the very top. You can see a little brown on the 27 July picture.

3 August (24 cm long) I will pick this in a few days once the entire fruit looks like it has cracks, like it looks at the top.

I lost the first Moi baby probably since it did not get pollinated, but I found this one the other day and pollinated it myself. I'll be able to tell if I was successful in a few day.

(3 August) the second Red Cucumber (Moi) is growing quickly. As mentioned above, I found a third fruit and pollinated it myself, but not sure if it made it yet. I also found a forth Moi on my second floor balcony and pollinated it.

The Red Cucumber (Moi) in my side yard is growing fast. The smaller one was not pollinated and has dried up. Like with most climbers, the plants create a male and female flower. The female flower has a small fruit with a flower on the end and if the flower is not pollinated it will simply dry up and fall off. I should have taken the opportunity to try and pollinate the flower when I saw it, but did not think of it at the time. My fault!

Red Cucumber (Moi)

Had a nice surprise today. The Red Cucumber (Moi) plant in my side yard is doing so well and growing quickly. When I was looking at the flowers, I noticed one that was different and realized it was a baby Moi. It is kind of white or yellow, but will get darker as it matures.

I got a second surprise with this even larger Moi. It has grown inside my Avocado tree, so I did not notice it. Yeah!
